Recently completed, this project has an interesting story to tell. Originally built in the late 1870s, where there was little else around, the 1,500 square foot farm house stood on its original site until the 1940s. As the town grew, and all the farms went away, the house was moved several blocks to make way for a new post office in the 1940s. Somewhere in transit, it lost its front porch. Today's owners wanted to restore the original and add back the other parts of a farm compound combined in one house. Thus, we added a barn in the back and a silo in the middle. The four-story silo is clad in terracotta tile, typical of the 19th century. Within it is a spiral stair linking the lower level with the attic, and is illuminated by a clearstory window high above the roof. The silo organizes the spaces around it including a new attached garage, family room and kitchen on the first floor and master suite and two additional bedrooms and baths on the second floor. The porch was restored to its original design and presents a welcoming presence to the street.
