One of the last wood frame houses constructed after the Chicago Fire, the house had experienced a hundred years of neglect and bad additions and renovations, including it having been subdivided into two apartments. All new exterior additions - porches, bay windows, and sheds, were carefully researched for historical accuracy to satisfy the requirements of the Chicago Commission on Landmarks. The interior was opened up around a new grand staircase linking all three floors (a new play room was concealed on the north side of the attic).
